Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging past a resilient Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time in one of the tournament’s most dramatic knockout clashes.

Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead in the first half with his record-extending 20th World Cup goal, but Cape Verde refused to back down. Deroy Duarte restored parity before the end of normal time, sending the contest into extra time.

Argentina regained the advantage early in extra time through Lisandro Martínez, only for Sidny Cabral to produce a stunning equaliser that reignited the underdogs’ hopes. However, Diney Borges’ unfortunate own goal in the 111th minute proved decisive, handing Argentina a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

Cape Verde, making their World Cup debut, won widespread admiration for their fearless display. Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha delivered a remarkable performance, denying Messi on several occasions with a string of outstanding saves that kept the African side in contention until the closing stages.

The victory keeps Argentina’s title defence alive and sets up a Round of 16 clash against Egypt. Despite the defeat, Cape Verde leave the tournament with their heads held high after pushing one of the favourites to the brink in a memorable World Cup classic.
