Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said addressing the state’s housing challenges requires more than simply constructing additional houses.

Sanwo-Olu made the remark while speaking on the housing situation in Lagos, where rising rents and limited access to affordable accommodation remain major concerns for residents.

The governor said adequate housing must be considered within the broader context of urban planning, infrastructure, transportation and access to basic services.

According to him, simply increasing the number of houses without addressing other factors affecting residents would not fully resolve the housing crisis.

He noted that the government must also consider where homes are located, their affordability and how easily residents can access workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services.

Sanwo-Olu said the state was therefore pursuing a broader approach to housing development as part of efforts to improve living conditions for Lagos residents.

He stressed the need for housing policies that respond to the realities of the state’s growing population and ensure that more residents can access decent and affordable accommodation.

The governor’s comments come amid concerns over rising rents across Lagos, with many residents struggling to secure affordable housing in different parts of the state.

He said the government would continue to explore measures aimed at expanding housing access while improving the infrastructure and services needed to support communities.
