Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to popular musicians
Burna Boy, Davido, and Asake to use part of their wealth to assist poor and vulnerable Nigerians.
She made the appeal on Saturday during the launch of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Lokoja, Kogi State.
According to the First Lady, the government faces significant challenges in addressing poverty and supporting small-scale traders across the country.
She encouraged wealthy entertainers and other affluent Nigerians to establish charitable foundations and contribute more to humanitarian causes.
Tinubu cited Senegalese-American singer Akon as an example of an artiste involved in philanthropic work.
“We have a lot of wealthy people but I think our priorities are different. It is time we started helping those who need help in the country,” she said.
She added that owning luxury cars and enjoying a comfortable lifestyle were not wrong, but stressed that successful individuals should also give back to society.
The First Lady’s remarks have generated reactions on social media, with some Nigerians supporting the call for greater charitable involvement from celebrities, while others argued that addressing poverty should remain a primary responsibility of government.
