The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing reports that an estimated 139 million Nigerians now live below the national poverty line.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party said the poverty figures reflected the impact of the Federal Government’s economic reforms on ordinary Nigerians.
The party argued that improvements in macroeconomic indicators, including increased government revenue and rising foreign reserves, had not translated into better living conditions for citizens.
According to the ADC, the latest poverty and hunger figures show that millions of Nigerians continue to struggle despite the government’s economic reforms. It also cited reports indicating that about 17 million people are facing acute hunger.
The opposition party urged the Federal Government to review its economic policies, insisting that poverty cannot be addressed through temporary interventions alone but through reforms that improve food production, create jobs and raise household incomes.
ADC said an alternative approach should prioritise agricultural productivity, support farmers, improve rural infrastructure and strengthen social investment to address the root causes of poverty and hunger.
The Federal Government has yet to respond to the ADC’s latest claims.
