UEFA has warned that its member associations could boycott the 2030 FIFA World Cup if FIFA proceeds with plans to sell stakes in a commercial entity linked to the tournament to private investors.
The European football governing body said the proposal had been unanimously rejected by its 55 member associations, arguing that the World Cup should not be treated as a commercial asset for investors.
UEFA maintained that its national teams would not participate in FIFA competitions if the proposal goes ahead, unless it is withdrawn.
The warning follows FIFA’s proposal to establish a new commercial subsidiary to manage the commercial rights of the World Cup and other competitions while selling a minority stake to outside investors.
FIFA has maintained that it would retain full control over football governance and all sporting decisions under the proposed arrangement.
