The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned President Bola Tinubu against further measures that could worsen the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.
The opposition party issued the warning following the increase in petrol prices to as much as ₦1,470 per litre in some locations.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the rising cost of petrol was affecting transportation, food, electricity, education and other essential expenses.
The party said higher fuel prices were putting additional pressure on households and businesses already struggling with increased operating costs.
The ADC also expressed concern over reports of rising private school fees, saying many parents were unable to cope with additional financial pressure.
The party, however, acknowledged that school owners were also dealing with increased costs of electricity, fuel, taxes, rent and workers’ salaries.
The opposition party criticised the Federal Government’s economic reforms, arguing that such policies should improve the living conditions of Nigerians rather than worsen hardship.
“At N1,470 per litre, petrol is no longer simply a commodity. It is Tinubu Tax, which has made life unbearable for the majority,” the party said.
The ADC also warned the government against interpreting Nigerians’ resilience in the face of economic hardship as acceptance of its policies.
It urged Tinubu to take urgent steps to address the rising cost of living and reduce the pressure on households and businesses.
“Don’t push Nigerians to their limits,” the party warned.
The ADC said its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, would pursue policies aimed at reducing fuel costs and promoting domestic production if elected in 2027.
