A member of the United States Congress has called for the immediate release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The lawmaker made the appeal during a public event, arguing that Kanu’s continued detention has drawn international attention and raised concerns about human rights and due process.

He urged the Nigerian government to resolve the matter in line with the rule of law and respect for fundamental rights.

The renewed call comes as Kanu’s trial continues in Nigeria, with his legal team maintaining that he should be released, while the Federal Government insists the judicial process should be allowed to run its course.

Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his extradition to Nigeria in 2021 over terrorism-related charges, which he has denied.
