Former President Goodluck Jonathan has firmly denied reports claiming he was offered ₦500 billion to run in the 2027 presidential election against Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in a bid to split votes in the South-South region.
In a statement issued on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan described the allegation as “completely false, baseless, and a deliberate attempt to drag him into unnecessary political controversy.”
Eze said the report falsely suggested that Jonathan had disclosed receiving the huge offer to challenge Obi.
He criticised the publication for lacking basic journalistic standards, noting that it failed to provide essential details such as when and where the alleged offer was made, who made it, or any witnesses to the claim.
The former president’s media aide described the story as fabricated news designed to mislead the public and stir political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections.“Jonathan was never involved in any ‘N500 billion offer to divide the South’s votes against Peter Obi in the 2027 general elections,” Eze stated.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the report and always verify sensational political claims before sharing them, warning that election periods often see a rise in misinformation and fake attributions.
“Jonathan has not made any statement suggesting he was offered money to contest the presidency or undermine any candidate,” the statement concluded.
