Teachers in Oyo State are set to return to classrooms after the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) suspended its indefinite strike over security concerns.
The Oyo State chapter of the union announced the suspension on Tuesday, saying the decision followed a review of the security situation across the state as well as consultations with the state government and appeals from relevant stakeholders.
The strike was declared in response to the abduction of schoolchildren in Ogbomoso, Orire Local Government Area, with the union demanding stronger security measures to protect teachers, pupils and schools.
In a statement jointly signed by the state NUT Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Olukayode Salami, the union said it had reassessed the prevailing security situation before deciding to call off the industrial action.
The suspension of the strike clears the way for teachers to resume academic activities in public schools across the state.
