The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the political platform of Peter Obi, has been deregistered following a ruling by a court in Kogi State, dealing a major setback to the opposition’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The judgment, which also affects the legal status of the party, comes amid ongoing disputes over the circumstances surrounding the NDC’s registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The party had faced legal challenges from political groups questioning the process that led to its registration.

Although the full details of the Kogi court’s decision were not immediately available, the ruling is expected to have significant political implications for Obi and the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi had earlier criticized judicial orders affecting political parties, warning that such decisions could erode public confidence in democratic institutions. He urged authorities to safeguard the independence of the judiciary and strengthen the rule of law.
