The presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party, Donald Duke, has warned that opposition parties could hand President Bola Tinubu victory in the 2027 presidential election if they fail to unite.
Duke, a former governor of Cross River State, said the opposition must work together and agree on a common candidate if it wants to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He made the remarks while discussing the 2027 election and the prospects of opposition parties challenging Tinubu.
Duke described Tinubu as a formidable politician and said the advantage of incumbency should not be underestimated.
According to him, the control of government institutions by an incumbent gives the ruling party an advantage during elections.
He said the opposition could defeat Tinubu if it put aside individual ambitions and worked towards a common objective.
Duke also expressed his willingness to step aside from the presidential race if opposition parties agree on a candidate considered capable of defeating Tinubu.
“Absolutely. First of all, once we have commonality in objective, the next question is who is best suited for this?” he said.
He, however, criticised Tinubu’s style of governance, saying his concern was with the President’s performance rather than his political ability.
“Give it to him, he is a formidable politician, my issue with him is governance not politics,” Duke said.
The PRP candidate argued that the opposition should prepare for possible challenges on election day rather than wait until after the election before raising complaints.
He also said opposition parties needed a clear strategy to protect their votes during the 2027 election.
