Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s running mate in the 2023 election, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has explained his decision to part ways with the former Anambra State governor.
Datti said he left Obi because he believed the former governor had not developed a clear plan for Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview with Symfoni TV, Datti said he had worked hard for Obi during the 2023 presidential campaign but later became dissatisfied with his political direction.
He said he had previously told Obi that he needed to develop a clear agenda for the country.
“Peter Obi didn’t abandon me; I left because he doesn’t have a plan for Nigeria. Peter Obi knows I stood for him. I still stand by him. It’s sad to see the moves he made. But it is his choice,” Datti said.
Datti also said he would not support the presidential ambitions of Obi or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar simply for the sake of opposing President Bola Tinubu.
“I won’t unfairly help promote Baba Atiku and Peter Obi and others just for no good reason because we need to be fair in life, and that’s what I stand for,” he said.
Datti and Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party platform, finishing third behind Tinubu and Atiku.
The development comes as political realignments continue among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
