A United States-based lobbying firm has threatened further action over allegations linking President Bola Tinubu to a drug-trafficking investigation in the US.

The firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, made the threat while commenting on ongoing legal proceedings concerning the release of records relating to the allegations.

The development followed a dispute over documents sought from US agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The records are connected to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by American businessman Aaron Greenspan, who is seeking information on an alleged investigation into a Chicago-based heroin ring in the 1990s.

Tinubu was among individuals named in the requests for records. The president has denied wrongdoing in connection with the allegations.

The lobbying firm, which was hired by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has been campaigning for the release of the records and has criticised efforts to keep some of the documents confidential.

It said it would continue pursuing the matter and warned those involved that it would take further steps if the records were not released.

The firm also alleged that attempts had been made to influence the legal process, although the claims have not been independently verified.

The controversy comes after the FBI asked a US court for permission to submit a confidential declaration explaining why some records relating to the allegations should remain withheld.

The agency said releasing the information could disclose law-enforcement techniques and potentially endanger individuals.

The case remains before a US federal court, while the full contents of the records sought by Greenspan have not been made public.
