Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has provided an update on the alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying the plan had no chance of succeeding.
Musa described the alleged coup plot as “foolhardy”, saying those behind it were confused individuals who could not have secured the support of Nigerians.
The minister spoke while discussing the ongoing prosecution of serving military personnel, civilians and a cleric accused of involvement in the alleged plot.
He said the suspects would be given a fair trial and allowed to defend themselves, adding that the military was following due process.
Musa said the allegations were uncovered through intelligence gathered by security agencies, including the Department of State Services and the Defence Intelligence Agency.
He said the alleged conspirators had no justification for attempting to seize power, arguing that the Armed Forces had been adequately supported under the Tinubu administration.
The minister also said the prosecution would continue and that the proceedings would provide an opportunity to establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
The alleged coup plot was uncovered in 2025, with several serving and retired military officers and civilians subsequently arrested and prosecuted.
The military had initially described the arrests as being linked to indiscipline and breaches of service regulations before later confirming that investigations had uncovered an alleged plan to overthrow the government.
