The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the alleged teargassing of pensioners who were protesting at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Sowore described the incident as an unacceptable response to citizens exercising their right to peaceful protest.
Reacting to the development, the activist likened the use of tear gas against the pensioners to subjecting them to a “gas chamber.”
He said the protesters, many of whom are elderly citizens, should not have been subjected to such treatment while demanding their rights.
Sowore also criticised the conduct of security operatives during the protest, calling for accountability over the alleged use of force against the pensioners.
The pensioners had gathered at the Lagos State House of Assembly to protest over issues relating to their welfare and pension entitlements.
The incident has generated concerns over the treatment of elderly citizens during protests and the use of force by security personnel.
Sowore urged the Lagos State Government and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly are protected.
He also called for greater attention to the grievances raised by the pensioners rather than the use of force to disperse them.
