Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to restore the fuel subsidy if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Atiku made the pledge while outlining his position on the government’s fuel subsidy removal and its impact on Nigerians.

The former vice president said he initially did not oppose the removal of the subsidy but questioned how the savings from the policy had been utilised.

He argued that Nigerians deserved greater transparency over the funds saved from the subsidy removal and whether the money had been channelled into improving critical sectors such as healthcare, education and security.

Atiku said he would consider restoring the subsidy if elected president, stressing the need for policies that would ease the economic burden on Nigerians.

His position comes as political parties and presidential candidates intensify their campaigns ahead of the 2027 general election, with economic hardship and the cost of living expected to remain major campaign issues.
